Sad Trip to the Gun Store
My father and I went to one of the better local shops, a place called Gateway Outfiffers, in St Charles, Mo to pick him up a few boxes of .20 Ga shells for Turkey Huntings...
I wanted to see what the going rate was on AKs (none in stock, no idea when they would get any) ARs (none in stock, no idea when they would get any) Glocks only 1 or two Mossbergs (none that I was interested in) .223/5.56 ammo (none in stock, no idea when they would get any) 7.62x39 ammo (none in stock, no idea when they would get any) 9mm ammo (none in stock, no idea when they would get any) .45 ammo (verry little, 35.00 for a box of 50) AR Mags (15 in stock Black steel no name w Green followers, 20.00 ea) Glock 21 Mags (1 in stock 24.00) AK MAgs (none in stock, no idea when they would get any) Ruger 10/22 mags (none in stock, no idea when they would get any) The place looked deserted... When we walked in, I was'nt sure if they were changing out the fall/winter stuff for Spring Summer or going out of Business... When I talked to the old guys behnd the counter, they were very polite and as helpful as they could be... They sadly said, what are you looking for that I'm out of.... As we talked for about about the state of things, he said they had orders in for over 9K worth of ammo, but had no idea when if any would come in... Said he thought they would get about 2K worth in 2-3 weeks.... Everyone on of their suppliers is back ordered on everything they want.... Pretty much all they had in was ammo wise was Black Powder stuff, select shotgun shells, and the harder to find less common hunting rifle rounds... Firearms wise, they had a lot of Bolt action and hunting style shot guns... It really is starting to get freaky out there... |
Re: Sad Trip to the Gun Store
Cabela's is stocked. For how long who knows?
Anyone use the Fiocchi ammo? http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/te...233&hasJS=true |
Re: Sad Trip to the Gun Store
I do not mind a bolt action shot gun, or a bolt action rifle.
just me though. sure a pump or automatic can put more lead in the air faster, but for hunting I actually prefer a single shot. |
Re: Sad Trip to the Gun Store
I'm not so sure this phenomenon is "sad" - I think it's a positive trend.

Re: Sad Trip to the Gun Store
I'm glad to see others are waking up and arming themselfs, but Its sad to me when I can not buy cases of ammo like I used to and Boxes of magazines...
If I have money, they don't have them in stock, if they have them, the price shoots up, way past affordable... |
Re: Sad Trip to the Gun Store
Those who hustle up the merchandise have the merchandise to sell. Those too lazy to hustle up the merchandise don't have any.

Re: Sad Trip to the Gun Store
After following the Walmart ammo thread for a little while I decided to check out Wally world for some ammo and found the shelves nearly bare.
I made today my ammo buying day and set out for 9mm and .223. I already have a large stock but I have been focusing on buying gold and food since the fall drop. After 3 hrs of driving and searching I was coming up short of anything. I found a mom and pop shop that I had been to before that was way off in the middle of nowhere and was successful in procuring some .223 and a little 9mm. The guy said that this was more than likely all he will have for the rest of the year since his suppliers cannot give him a date of delivery. Said that his cheap target loads are looking to be over $20 per box when he does get them. He tried to get some from the last gun show we had but he waited in line to get in for an hour and still could not get anything. Said that many people had hand carts filled with cases of .223/5.56 7.62x39 and 9mm .40 and .45. I was glad to get the 250 rounds he had left of .223 I really didn't think things would get this bad THIS QUICK. I am sure glad I stocked up over the past few years. The prices are really getting to be too much. |
Re: Sad Trip to the Gun Store
There is still plenty to buy out here - gun wise and some slim ammo finds - but overall crazy prices.
I can get an AK - AR - whatever almost - the prices are not attractive....sinking almost 1.5k for a saiga 12 + tactical stuff and mags/ammo myself right now. Had I done it 6 months ago it would have been under 1k. |
Re: Sad Trip to the Gun Store
i have seen saiga 12 around here going for 549.00 to 649.00 one dealer i know has 50 the other day , i may go by tomorrow an see what he still got

Re: Sad Trip to the Gun Store
Yes, had I ordered it, I could have saved 100 bucks - but once you pick up (2) 10 round mags - a tactical stock and a tactical foregrip and umm...hundred rounds of bird shot + 100 rounds of slug+00 - things get ugly!! haha I don't regret it but wish I had watched for the new saiga shipments closer than I was apparently.
If anyone can buy one under 700 bucks- I would get it. It will most likely be one of the best investments you can make right now. I will most likely pick up another myself. |

I was in the Cabelas in St Charles a couple of weeks ago they had all the ammo you could want...and some ARs as to the Fiocchi Ammo....most of it is made in missouri so its local.....and it is some of the finest ammo i have ever shot for non match, non specialty hunting ammo....clean....no missfires...reasonably priced...very accurate Fiocchi.....is my prefered shotgun...9mm...and 223 ammo... |

Rebel just think how much more you can spend on drums for that. :bear_w00t: Really though the Saiga 12 is just a beast. After modding mine it is my favorite gun to shoot. Now I just need to get me a brake of some sort for it. Been putting this off for too long. I might put one of these on the end of it. http://i332.photobucket.com/albums/m...y/MVC-192F.jpg |
Re: Sad Trip to the Gun Store
Well, the Chaos brake looks good - it seems to be the only nasty looking brake available right now. That was the only piece I held off on for now.
EDit - if you get one - and put it on - let me know how it fits woudl ya? I'm curious if the nut is a must or if it able to line up properly without one. |

The only Italian made Fiocchi i have seen around here was in the AK and SKS rounds I dont know what calibres come from Italy ...but i shoot a LOT of 12ga..9mm...223...308...and i know it comes from Missouri.....all the skeet ranges in southwest missouri FEATURE Fiocchi ..... I shoot the most 9mm and it is much cleaner than CCI,Wolf,Winchester,Remmington, Federal..... on 223 i put it just slightly below Black Hills ammo in accuracy.....we usually can buy it around here in bulk....in the .35-.60 per round price range as a example I would be quite suprized if they dont start dominating the midrange ammo market in the midwest...and fill the Notch above the "wolf level" and below the Match grade ammo's Fiocchi USA website...corp headquarters in missouri....http://www.fiocchiusa.com/Contacts.html |

The majority of Rifle cartridges are being developed and loaded in our facility in Ozark, MO. We are utilizing state of the art machinery that has been developed in Italy for this new challenging task. The cases are produced in Europe with exacting tolerances. These quality raw materials are produced with the same die designs used for military contracts. Fiocchi of America has constructed a new state of the art firing range with capabilities up to 300 yards to test this new line of rifle cartridges. |
Re: Sad Trip to the Gun Store
One of our local stores has stacks of 1000 round boxes of 223's. We went in the other day and they just got a load of powder in too! I go in expecting to buy 100.00 worth of stuff and ended up using my FRN that were to buy Silver on lead!

Regarding Fiocchi Ammo.... Below Images: The first image is a comparison of .38 Special loads for a visual of what I'm about to say. On my limited experience the Fiochi cartridge brass and copper jackets seems to be very prone to passive air tarnishing. I stock my FRESH .38 Special stash in a few steel surplus ammo boxes -- all together and same conditions in factory packaging. None looked tarnished when they arrived from either Sportsman's Guide, CheaperThanDirt or Midway. See how distinctly corroded looking (tarnished) the Fiocchi brass looks when compared below:
I can also easily scan .38s from MagTech and American Eagle, but they look just as BRIGHT fresh as the Remington brass and copper shown above. Believe me, the Fiocchi .38 Special, item #38G looks about like Remington Peters pistol ammo my Dad had bought 30-40 years ago and just aged into patina naturally. I can show you 49 more cartridges, better and tighter scans if you wish. Maybe they had a bad lot of alloy, both of copper jacket and brass case ... I can only wonder. (it is not magnetic) Buffalo bore still looks like it just had a dremmel buff it a minute ago... mirror bright, but it was kept exactly the same, with the same approx age of delivey. The second image is of .410 3" shells.
Just sharing what I know on ammo as of today, thanks! |

Re: Sad Trip to the Gun Store
I do high volume shooting in 9mm
The difference in cleanup after a 500rnd session between Fiocchi and winchester or remmington is Drastic and Startling the Fiocchi is Drasticly Cleaner for what its worth if your shooting 20 rnds i doubt if it makes a difference...but if your shooting 500 or 1000 rnds, action fouling and cleanup can be a significant issue just wanted to add this for any who shoot these kind of volumes they might want to test Fiocchi as a alternative |

Re: Sad Trip to the Gun Store
gawd , I hope you didn't buy that porcuipine thingy.
looks like the nut might actually help to "center" the brake a lil better on yers. Nice gun though - thanks for sharing. |
